Shiver me timbers—it’s time for Esquimalt Buccaneer Days!
One of the best things about cohousing is being part of a vibrant, connected community—and Esquimalt makes that easy. Buccaneer Days is a beloved local tradition, bringing neighbours together for a weekend of fun, creativity, and a whole lot of pirate spirit.
Since 1966, residents have dressed up in naval and pirate attire to celebrate the season, and compete for best costume. With homes decked out in full pirate décor, the atmosphere is festive, playful, and—some say — even bigger than Halloween.

So, how are we joining the fun?
“I’m getting my pirate gear ready to talk about cohousing with my mates,” says Jill Marchand, equity member of Esquimalt Village Cohousing and captain of this year’s Buccaneer Days crew.
Esquimalt Village Cohousing joined the festivities for the first time last year and is excited to make it an annual tradition. The event takes place at the Archie Browning Sports Centre—just across the street from our future home. Once our building is complete, we’ll be able to watch the festivities from our sixth-floor balcony before heading down to join in.
This year, you’ll find us on-site sharing our vision for cohousing, connecting with potential members, and handing out colouring sheets for kids.
And of course, no proper pirate crew comes empty-handed. Instead of typical swag, we’re crocheting hearts—because we are a strata with heart.
Avast, me hearties! These sweet handmade hearts await all visitors to our table at Buccaneer Days.
While the traditional “big parade” won’t take place this year, there’s still plenty to enjoy: a bike parade, midway rides, delicious food, community breakfasts and barbecues, a costume contest, the Kids’ Pirate Den, Music Bingo, Little Buccaneers’ Olympics, volleyball tournaments, and a Mother’s Day celebration.
