Is Cohousing Right For You?

Cohousing isn’t for everyone. So how do you decide if it’s right for you?

Take the time to explore whether cohousing is a fit for your household. Here are three ways to find out what living in cohousing is really like, and whether it supports your goals, finances and community values.

One of the founding members of Esquimalt Village Cohousing stands in her kitchen, smiling at you while holding a glass of red wine. In the background, people chat in an airy and bright living room over glasses of wine and appetizers.

Live events like our Soup Social (pictured) are a great low-key way to chat with members, and get a sense of our cohousing community.

One easy option is to attend our live events or free information sessions. Talking directly with our members is often the best first step to chat about questions like - what does cohousing cost, why we chose Esquimalt, or how our project is going.

For those who want to dig deeper, becoming an Associate Member provides access to our project information, workshops, and community resources. You'll also be paired with an Equity Member who can act as your guide, helping you navigate meetings, answer questions, and make the most of our member wiki.

But what if you're somewhere in between - you’re curious about cohousing, and you’re looking for a low-pressure way to find out more?

Join us on Wednesday, June 17th from 6 -7 pm PST for “Is Cohousing For You?”, a free, virtual workshop hosted by one of the most experienced cohousing voices in Canada, Margaret Critchlow. Register here for the link, or read on!

What’s covered:

In about 90 minutes, you’ll cover the essentials — what cohousing actually is, how it works day-to-day, and what it asks of the people who choose it. There's plenty of time for questions. You’ll learn:

  • The origins and principles of cohousing — and what sets it apart from condos, co-ops, and communes

  • What daily life actually looks like in a cohousing community

  • Shared spaces, community decision-making, and the social contract

  • Cohousing as a path to ownership — how it's financed and structured

  • Who cohousing tends to work for — and honest talk about if it doesn't

  • Live Q&A — bring every question you have!

Who this is for:

You don't need to be close to a decision. This session is for anyone at the "I keep hearing about cohousing and I'm curious" stage. It's especially resonant if you find yourself in any of these situations:

  • You're thinking about downsizing and wondering what comes next

  • You work from home and miss the organic social contact of an office

  • You'd like to age in a place where people look out for each other

  • You've always wanted real community but haven't found it in conventional housing

  • You're new or relocating to Victoria and looking for belonging as much as a home

  • You're just curious — that's more than enough reason to come!

Choosing where and how to live is a decision that can change your future for the better.  Whether cohousing ultimately feels right for you or not, this workshop will give you a clearer understanding of the model, the opportunities it offers, and the realities of community living.
